Hillstream Loach

Pseudogastromyzon laticeps

Plum Fin ~Type 4

Also known as the Plum Fin Loach or Plum Fin Sucker, Pseudogastromyzon laticeps is a captivating little fish that's full of personality and charm. Native to the fast-moving, crystal-clear mountain streams of Guangdong province in Southeast China, these loaches are a joy to observe in a well-designed aquarium.

🌈 A Splash of Color

Growing to just 2–2.5 inches in length, these petite loaches truly shine as they mature. Males, in particular, develop vivid magenta-red fins with a striking purple sheen. As they reach breeding age, small tubercles (horn-like bumps) may form around their snouts—used for foraging and occasional, harmless sparring between males.

🐟 Peaceful and Social

P. laticeps are peaceful bottom dwellers that thrive in groups. They enjoy grazing on biofilm and algae, often seen clinging to rocks in areas of strong current. Mimicking their natural habitat with smooth stones, ample flow, and high oxygen levels will keep them happy and healthy.

🥬 Diet

Primarily herbivorous, these loaches feed on algae and microorganisms in the wild. In the aquarium, they’ll appreciate a varied diet that includes:

  • Algae wafers

  • Blanched vegetables (like spinach or zucchini)

  • Sinking pellets

  • Occasional protein-rich treats (e.g., daphnia or bloodworms) or Repashy Gel Food

🏞️ Tank Setup

To replicate their native environment:

  • Maintain temperatures between 68–75°F (20–24°C)

  • Provide strong water flow and high oxygenation

  • Use smooth rocks and fine gravel or sand

  • Ensure excellent water quality and a secure lid (they’re known climbers!)

🧡 Tank Mates

These loaches get along well with other peaceful species that enjoy similar cool, oxygen-rich waters. They can also be kept with dwarf shrimp and other small, gentle tankmates.

🐣 Breeding

While rare in captivity, breeding is possible under the right conditions: slightly cooler water, a nutrient-rich diet, and a substrate of coarse gravel may help encourage natural behaviors.

⏳ Lifespan

With excellent care, P. laticeps can live for 5 years or more, bringing vibrant movement and color to your aquarium for years to come.
